Communications and Security. Mr. Laferty, Chairman, reported.
1. The magnetic variation around the globe changes a fraction of a degree every year. After a 10-year period the variation changes to the amount that our runways 20 (200 degrees) and 02 (20 degrees) are now 206 degrees and 026 degrees which is now closer to 21 (210 degrees) and 03 (026 degrees) for our runway headings. However when the FAA thinks the runways should be changed to reflect the latest variation they will make that determination. If the FAA requests the change then they or the state will fund the repainting of the numbers.
2. E-mail from the FAA advised that the Airport ID will be updated and changed from M97 to SYM on July 14, 2014.
3. National Weather Service requested that TAF service for our Airport be requested through an official letter under the Airport’s letterhead and state reasons why we need the TAF service. The letter has been drafted and signed by the Chairman and approved by Mr. Shawn Harley of The National Weather Service in Jackson, KY. After an evaluation period of data submitted by the M97 AWOS, the request will be sent to the NOAA Regional Office for approval and publication.
